After 3 days of persistent diligent efforts, finally managed to share my laptops wi fi internet connection with my Samsung Galaxy Tab. This article captures this journey.
Day 1 Method - Set-up Adhoc network between laptop and device to share DSL connection

My OS - Windows 7
How? -
Go to Network and Sharing Center/Manage Wireless Connection/ADD
Setup a new Ad hoc network , provide SSID(any name), authentication (OPEN), Security(WEP), Password(5 digits)
Then your Ad hoc newtork would be up and running looking for other devices to connect.
Go to Network and Sharing Center/ Network and Connections/'Local Area Connection' for DSL connection, go to Advanced setting and check the option to 'Allow sharing internet' and uncheck 'Allow other devices to manage the network'
ITS DONE
Expected - The Ad hoc wi-fi network should be visible to other devices(laptops/phones/tablets)
Actual - No ad hoc network visible in GALAXY TAB. The Ad hoc network visible in other laptop but always NOT IN RANGE
RESULT - METHOD FAILED
Day 2 Method - Set-up Adhoc network between laptop and device to share wi-fi connection

Go to Network and Sharing Center/ Network and Connections/'Wireless network Connection', right click, go to Advanced setting and check the option to 'Allow sharing internet' and uncheck 'Allow other devices to manage the network'

Expected - The Ad hoc wi-fi network should be visible to other devices(laptops/phones/tablets)
Actual - Ad hoc network is visible in GALAXY TAB but always stuck in 'Obtaining IP address' even after disabling all firewalls in the laptop.
RESULT - METHOD FAILED
Day 3 Method - Use free software like 'Connectify'

Then START HOTSPOT , and your laptop hotspot would be up and running looking for other devices to connect.
ITS DONE
Expected - The wi-fi network should be visible to other devices(laptops/phones/tablets)
Actual - Ad hoc network is visible in GALAXY TAB. Connects successfully.
Ping to laptop - SUCCESSFUL
Ping to internet - FAILED
Even after disabling firewalls , no success
RESULT - METHOD FAILED
Day 4 Method - Use free software like 'Connectify' on a different laptop
